CBC Analyzer Machine

What is CBC Analyzer?

CBC means Complete Blood Count and the common terminology for it is Hematology Analyzer that is used to count and identify blood cells (CBC). CBC is a test conducted to understand and study the general health of a patient. In older times, a microscope was used to manually count the blood cells which was a tedious and time-taking task. This was practically difficult to carry out for a huge number of people per day. Therefore, with time, a need for a machine was realized, and hence came the introduction of the CBC/Hematology Analyzer machine.

Let’s look at the advantages of the CBC Analyzer machine.

  1. It accurately determines the red cell indices
  2. It depicts accuracy and precision in quantitative blood tests
  3. It can perform several tests on a single platform with a single sample
  4. It reduces the requirement of labor in labs
  5. It has underlying speed with which it can handle multiple samples quickly and efficiently

There are two main types of Hematology analyzers:

  1. Semi-automated

There are some steps in the CBC analysis that requires a lab technician to conduct by hand. One such step is the dilution of blood samples. With this machine, only a few parameters can be measured for every blood sample.

  1. Fully-automated

This type of hematology machine requires an anticoagulated blood sample. This machine can measure multiple parameters and do so quickly for many samples.

The CBC Analyzer machine works on 3 major principles Electrical Impedance, Flow Cytometry, and Florescence. All these principles and more will be discussed further to understand the process behind the analysis.

Applications of CBC Analyzer

A CBC Analyzer or Hematology Analyzer is a machine that has automated the process of counting complete blood cells in any blood sample. But the applications in detail recount that the findings are not limited to the number but a detailed analysis of the cells as well. The other applications of CBC Analyzer are as follows:

  1. RBC distribution width
  2. Platelet distribution width
  3. Platelet mean volume
  4. Platelet criteria
  5. Mean Corpuscular volume
  6. Mean Corpuscular hemoglobin
  7. Mean Corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations
  8. WBC differential count in percentage and the absolute value
  9. Large platelet cell ratio

All these applications can be visualized when you receive a complete blood count of any sample. The report displays the readings, their ideal value, and the current measured value in it. This ensures that every report is accurate so that the cause of any concern in a person can be identified more effectively.

How does CBC Analyzer Work?

To understand how the automated hematology analyzers or CBC analyzers work, you need to understand the underlying principles. As discussed earlier there are three most important principles but there are two more that can be considered important for the working. All these principles work in constant motion together to give the complete report for CBC analysis.

  1. Electrical Impedance

This technology is the original method of counting blood cells through the Coulters Principle. This basic foundation is present within every single hematology analyzer. This technology requires two electrodes set so close in an isotonic solution so that once a vacuum is applied, only one cell is pushed through the gap in between. This generates a flow of current and a pulse. This pulse is measured. It is done so because of the higher the cell volume, the greater the pulse. Hence, you can measure the count and volume of cells.

  1. Light Scatter

It measures cell morphology that includes granularity, inner complexity, and diameter through the laser technology to scatter the bloodstream. This is possible when the blood is passed through a section and the laser beam strikes a cell. The cell scatters and sends light which is analyzed and results noted within the automated machine.

  1. Florescence

This adds a little to previous technology by analyzing platelet count, reticulocytes, cell surface antigens, and nucleated RBCs.

  1. Light Absorption

This measures hemoglobin concentration by converting it into a complex compound where the information can be gathered through absorption spectrophotometry.

  1. Electrical conductivity

A high-frequency current is used to determine the physical and chemical composition of the leucocytes for their classification.
